Why should your manager take the lead in reviewing your last year and planning your next year?
Whether or not your firm or organisation conduct an annual review, do your own. Take 10 minutes to jot down answers to simple questions:
- How has the last year has gone: what things were you proud of / key achievements?
- What things do you wish you could change?
- What you want to see happen in the next year? (Think objectives, specifics, quantify)
- What promises have your firm or organisation made to you over the last year?
- Have they been fulfilled?
- What commitments have the firm / organisation made to you about the forthcoming year?
There is nothing so frustrating as having the same conversation year after year, whether it is about progression opportunities, development of a niche area, or salary increases.
We have a good overview of the market and the salaries on offer and whilst everything is very much dependent on experience and the demands of the market, we can offer some insight into what might be available elsewhere. We find people are more likely to become frustrated by broken promises than almost anything else in the workplace. We always try to ensure when you move to a new role that promises are carried through and if plans are set for the future they are realistic and written in to your contract where possible.
