Creating Online Presence

In light of the Facebook scandal earlier this year there has been a lot of talk about data usage and selling.
Should you change the way you present yourself online as a result?

This Month: Managing Your Online Presence

We all post things on Facebook, Instagram, etc but perhaps what recent events have reminded us is that these are not ‘private’ places. Whilst it may not be being monitored it can be monitored even if only internally and perhaps even only by computers. That might be totally fine, but then again we can’t see the future and it might be that by sharing so much of ourselves online we end up creating future issues that we cannot foresee. I still maintain that a child whose life has been posted online for everyone to see will end up suing their parents for breach of privacy at some point. If it hasn’t happened yet I do think it is just a matter of time.

I know anecdotally that rarely does a divorce happen these days where Facebook isn’t quoted as part of the ‘behaviour’ of the other party.
We always advise people to think about their own online presence, be aware that future and current employers will be googling you. It’s of course totally fine to have a life outside of work but being professional and trustworthy is equally important. Recently students at a university were in trouble for racist abuse within an online chat forum so it’s never too early in your career, to think about the consequences of your online actions!
If you want to give your Linked In profile an upgrade we can help, just get in touch.  Or if you’d like to join us on Gated Talent click here to make a private profile that helps us to help you in your career, either now or in the future.
