Over the past year these emails have been designed to help you make the time and space just once a month to focus on a specific issue or action to ensure that your career stays on track.
If you were running your own business you’d need to think about where the business is going not just the day to day work.
If you have a job then it is no different. Your career is your business and must not be sacrificed to your job.
This Month: Think about your career not your job
Over the last 12 months have you been challenged, stretched and learnt new things?
- What would you change about your job if you had the ability/ authority?
- What percentage of each day/ week/ month do you find enjoyable?
- How could that enjoyment be increased?
- What is your least favourite task at work?
- How can it be minimised or improved?
Small changes make a big difference. Take on an extra responsibility to try something new. Implement an idea in the office that you have been mulling over for some time. Take a course to give yourself greater specialism /knowledge, or enhance your business skills. If you wrestle daily with IT then get training from an expert. If you wish you had more support in an area of law then look for relevant groups whether locally or online (twitter/Linked In) who offer meaningful discussion.
Not only will these things give you more interest in your day to day work but they will ensure your career moves forward, avoiding the all too easy plateaux that can occur.
