It seems as though Spring has brought with it some real signs of positivity in the working world so it is a great time to keep the career ball rolling onwards!
Take some time over this long weekend to think about your own career. Often it can take time to find the next firm in your career path, so it is good to remain ‘interview ready’ until the time comes.
This Month… Hone your interviewing skills!
Always a tricky thing to practice, if you have been in a role for some time it is more likely you have interviewed people rather than been the one being interviewed. How to keep interview ready? Think of some frequently asked questions and in your own mind form skeleton answers:
- Your strengths and your weaknesses (for weaknesses focus on ones that can be turned around, ie easily bored = always looking for a new project)
- Your reasons for enjoying/ sticking with your area of law
- Your contributions to the business development of your team/firm (increasingly important and sometimes the focus of the whole interview)
Think about situations where you took action/ took the initiative that lead to a positive outcome for you/ the client/ the firm. It could be anything but have a few scenarios in your head that show you in a good light and that prove your legal and business skills in some aspect. Whilst you don’t know the questions that will be asked, thinking about some stories that you can tell will help you have something (interesting and relevant) to say.
Hobbies and interests can feel like a minefield subject, but remember that what employers are usually looking for is passion… about anything. They are not there to judge your personal life but they just want to see that you are passionate, be it about your family, your fly fishing or your football team!
Once again thanks for reading, remember I am always here to help with interviews when the time comes!
