As we move through December, many of us take stock of the year and consider what we want from the next.
With this in mind you may have noticed that I am sharing a short series on LinkedIn: twelve statistics that shine a light on the legal recruitment market and what they mean for your long term career.
Each video highlights one simple data point to help you look at your career with a bit more clarity and confidence.
This month: 12 days of Statistics to think about in your Legal Career
This first week we started with the big picture.
1. We each have roughly 4,000 weeks in our lifetime, and we spend around 80,000 hours working.
These numbers land differently when you work in law, where the pace is high and time is your most valuable resource. It is why I always encourage solicitors to look at their career as a whole rather than through the lens of a single busy season. When such a significant portion of your life is spent working, it needs to feel worthwhile. Not perfect every day, but meaningful overall. If you have found yourself running on autopilot this year, consider how you are using your time and whether your role still supports your wellbeing and ambition.
2. Research suggests it takes about 10,000 hours to become an expert at something.
In practice this equates to roughly five years of full time work, which aligns closely with how the profession views PQE. Around the five year mark most solicitors are considered able to manage files independently. Insurers assess risk at that level too, and most fee share platforms set a similar threshold. None of this appears accidental. It reflects what many of you will have experienced yourselves. After about five years you know your area well enough to trust your judgment, work with autonomy and make informed choices about the direction you want to take.
If you recognise yourself somewhere in these numbers, it can be a useful moment to pause. Is your career moving in the direction that suits you today, not just the version of you who qualified?
If you are unsure, a low risk first step is simply to explore your options. No commitments. Just space to think. You can book a time to talk in my diary and in talking through the last year we can find some clarity in moving forward not just for 2026 but for the long term.
If you would like to talk about any aspect of your career planning, whether you are newly qualified or considering partner level changes, I am here to support you.
Keep watch on LinkedIn and our other social channels for the rest of the stats and of course have a wonderful break when it comes.
As always we will be making a charity contribution instead of sending Christmas cards, this year we have selected Helping Hands Suffolk, a local charity doing really important work.
Whilst our office is officially shut over the festive period, if you want to chat whilst you are taking a break then please do get in touch. I’m very happy to put something in the diary to think about how your 2025 panned out, and how 2026 can be the best year yet for your legal career!
