As we step into 2026, it’s a good moment to pause and reflect on your career.
Whether you’re a trainee, NQ, mid-level associate, or partner, this year can be whatever you make of it.
This month: 2026 Make it your year
One simple truth often gets overlooked: if you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you’ve got there?
Clarity about your career and progression is key. Knowing what you want – in terms of role, type of work, culture, or work-life balance – gives you direction and allows you to make confident decisions when opportunities arise.
Research backs this up. Stephen Levitt conducted a study with tens of thousands of people who were unsure about whether to make a major life change. After receiving advice on making hard decisions, those still undecided were given the chance to flip a coin to settle the question. Around 22,500 people did so.
Levitt followed up two and six months later. The finding? Those who made a change on an important question gained an average of 2.2 points of happiness out of 10.
The takeaway for the legal profession is clear: if you’ve been on the fence about a move – whether leaving a role, changing practice area, or exploring a new type of position – taking action can make a real difference. Staying indecisive rarely improves satisfaction or wellbeing.
As a careers coach and recruiter, I see this daily. People that pause, reflect, and take thoughtful action – even small steps – often find that clarity and progress bring confidence, better balance, and a sense of achievement.
