With the first signs of Spring is it time to open your career up to a new start too? If you commute for 2 hours each day then how long do you spend commuting each year?
Well its 10 hours a week so that is one good working day each of the 52 weeks a year. Imagine what you could do with 52 extra days in the year! (Ok there are 4 weeks holiday but still 48 more days in the year would be useful)
This month… Can you cut the commute?
Ask yourself the question. Things that might help:
- Can you work from home each week or even just at some times of year?
- Could you work from another branch of your firm?
- Is it time to look for a role closer to home?
Often at different career stages it is necessary to travel for work. Sometimes we keep travelling even when that initial usefulness has faded. If you took a role with a long commute to get a foot in the door, but it is 4 + years later and you are still commuting then perhaps you are firmly through the door and there might be options closer to home that meet your needs.
Equally if you are established in a role with a proven track record then asking to work from home for some defined days or tasks might be an option. Results can be measured and the decision can be based on past positive performance.
Often I work with legal professionals who are on a long term watch for a role closer to home. The roles don’t necessarily come up often, the wait can be months or years, but if I know you are looking then I can flag things closer to home when they do arise.
