Power to the NQ!

toddler in autumn leaves

As we come out of the main season of qualification we wanted to take a moment to reflect upon the changing fortunes of the NQ and what this means for the rest of the market.

This year has seen a marked change in the market for NQ roles. There have been some opportunities! There have been many! Lots of the bigger firms have taken on a large percentage of their own trainees and they need more… lots more!

This month: What is the market like for NQs?

Even last year when people came to the end of their training contracts they were often looking for a job, any job, as a solicitor. Anecdotally this is exemplified by people wanting a company commercial role but ending up taking a role in property litigation; or even wanting family law but ending up in commercial property.

This year there has been opportunities in many areas of law. Within firms NQs have held the power and have moved to the department of their choosing often having the pick of a number of roles. Trainees have gone in two short years from being beholden to any firm who will give them a training contract against the odds, to being in demand and being able to make a choice as to how they proceed! (NB: great blog on the struggles of finding a TC)

Overall this is a good sign for the market in terms of the individual. Now more than in recent years there are opportunities out there. Firms are looking to grow and there are not the solicitors there to fill the gaps.

There are even signs for cautious hope in areas such as litigation. Employment has bounced back now and the good firms who are doing it well are looking to recruit once more. As an individual whilst firms have roles to fill and a lack of qualified people to fill them you can really maximise your career growth.

NQs have not had it so good for many years and whilst they are in short supply the market will have to look at other options to fill that gap. Ali and myself are always happy to discuss your career or the market. Just get in touch!
